Another person wanted to see Evelyn's marriage certificate.
Evelyn supported Sophia as they walked.
Jason Lawrence followed behind them.
The three headed toward the lounge.
Jason spoke as they walked.
"Is your husband here yet?"
"He should make an appearance later to clear up those rumors…"
Sophia nodded.
"That's exactly what Evelyn plans to do."
Evelyn remained silent.
She reached out to push the door open.
The door did not open.
The lounge was locked.
This was Eleanor Vance's private lounge.
Eleanor was in the main hall.
Who was inside?
The lock turned.
Isabella emerged wearing a pink evening gown.
She saw Evelyn and Sophia.
She raised an eyebrow.
"Mother, Evelyn, what are you doing here?"
Sophia explained.
"Evelyn's bag is inside. We came to get it."
"You'll have to wait."
Isabella smiled brightly at Evelyn.
"Mrs. Vance is inside changing her gown!"
Evelyn was taken aback.
"Who?"
Isabella smiled even more triumphantly.
"Uncle's wife, Mrs. Vance!"
"Thomas Watson personally brought her here."
"He even asked me to help prepare a gown."
"I told you Uncle would introduce his wife tonight…"
Thomas Watson personally brought her…
Evelyn frowned.
Sophia frowned.
"Let Evelyn go in to get her bag."
Isabella pretended to be apologetic.
"Mother, this is Great-grandmother's lounge."
"Only the Vance family can enter."
"Auntie isn't feeling well."
"She shouldn't be exposed to drafts while changing."
"Better not to disturb her."
She emphasized the word "owner."
She looked at Evelyn with a smug smile.
"I'm afraid you'll all have to wait."
She linked arms with Sophia.
"Mother, Uncle is the head of the family."
"Auntie is the true lady of the house."
"Even I have to listen to her."
"Evelyn won't mind waiting, will she?"
Evelyn found it ridiculous.
"Are you sure it's really Mrs. Vance in there?"
"Of course."
Isabella stated confidently.
"Mr. Vance got married two years ago."
"The entire Vance family knows about Auntie's existence."
"Only some people refuse to believe it."
"They're still dreaming of climbing the social ladder!"
"Isabella!"
Sophia scolded.
"Watch your language!"
Isabella sneered.
"Mother, Evelyn is a Ross."
"I'm afraid she'll make a fool of herself and drag the Ashcroft name down."
"You taught us since we were young."
"Don't covet things that don't belong to you."
Sophia frowned.
"So you do remember."
But how had Isabella become like this?
Isabella didn't understand the implication.
There was movement from inside the room.
The door opened.
A girl in a blue evening gown stepped out.
Evelyn looked over.
The girl had delicate features.
She was the modest, pretty type.
Her skin was pale.
She was thin and frail.
She stood there panickedly, her eyes vacant.
Seeing so many people, she seemed to want to speak but didn't dare.
The stares made her uncomfortable.
She evoked a sense of pity.
Jason leaned close to Evelyn's ear and whispered.
"That's Sophia Watson!"
Isabella called out.
"Auntie, are you done changing?"
Sophia Watson nodded woodenly.
She tugged at her clothes unconfidently, trying to cover her exposed skin.
Her voice was small and timid.
"This dress… is it really okay?"
Everyone looked at her evening gown.
The light blue color made her sickly pale skin appear even whiter.
But her overly thin frame didn't fill out the dress.
It looked like a child playing dress-up in adult clothes.
Then there was the dress itself…
Sophia suddenly frowned and looked at Evelyn.
Not only were their dresses the same color, but the styles were also similar!
Isabella reassured her.
"It looks beautiful!"
Sophia Watson pointed timidly at Evelyn.
"Hers looks better… Should I change into something else?"
Isabella laughed.
She looked arrogantly at Evelyn.
"Evelyn, what a coincidence."
"You and Auntie have an outfit clash."
"Auntie is the lady of the house."
"Shouldn't you change your dress to show respect?"
This was basic banquet etiquette.
People usually avoided dressing similarly to the host.
Sophia wanted to say the same thing.
But she didn't know how to say it without hurting Evelyn's pride.
Evelyn didn't feel humiliated.
She sneered.
"You were there two days ago when Grandma chose this dress for me."
"You did this on purpose, didn't you?"
Isabella didn't bother hiding it.
"This dress is more suitable for the lady of the Vance family."
She stared directly at Evelyn.
"Evelyn, do you want to compete for attention with the hostess?"
Evelyn's face darkened.
Sophia took a deep breath.
"Evelyn, I'm not feeling well."
"Weren't you getting your bag?"
"Get your bag and take me home first."
It was the first time she used such a forceful tone with Evelyn.
Evelyn was taken aback.
"Madam…"
"Evelyn, if you still consider me your elder, come with me now."
Sophia grabbed her hand.
"I can't watch you humiliate yourself."
Evelyn clenched her jaw.
She sighed.
"Madam, let's look at the marriage certificate first before deciding, okay?"
Sophia didn't understand her insistence.
She could only say, "...Alright."
