Chapter 15

To the Vance Estate!

Beverly Hills was a legend in San Francisco.

It occupied the mountainside, sprawling over three thousand acres.

The Vance family estate alone claimed more than two thousand of those acres.

Dozens of other villas were scattered around the Vance property like stars.

It was the most exclusive enclave for the wealthy in the city.

Evelyn Ross had assumed the little old lady lived in one of the smaller surrounding villas.

She hadn't dared to imagine the Vance mansion itself.

She replied to the message: [No need. We are already in the car.]

The little old lady looked tired and fell asleep as soon as she got in the car.

The taxi wound its way up the wide, curving mountain road.

It entered Beverly Hills and dropped them off at the pin location before leaving.

Evelyn looked up at the magnificent, ornately carved black gate before her.

She hesitated. "Grandma, is this your home?"

The old lady was bleary-eyed and looked confused. "Granddaughter-in-law, I can't remember."

Evelyn sighed.

She texted the "grandson": [I think we might be lost.]

Grandson: [Wait right there. I'm coming.]

When a car approached, Evelyn noticed the nearest house was a few minutes' drive away.

They really couldn't wander off.

She helped the old lady sit on a nearby stone bench.

Suddenly, a BMW X7 pulled up in front of them.

Isabella Ashcroft and Linda Lowell rushed out from the back seat.

Linda frowned deeply, her voice sharp. "Evelyn Ross? It is you! What are you doing here?"

She had come to the Vance estate today as a maid, accompanying Isabella for a visit.

She had seen a girl loitering near the Vance gate from afar and couldn't believe it was actually her!

Isabella stared at the tightly shut Vance gate. "Evelyn, are you here to bother Mr. Vance again?"

Linda immediately started yelling. "You shameless wretch! Don't you know what day it is? Get out of here now! If you dare ruin Isabella's family recognition, I won't let you off!"

Evelyn was sick of them.

But with the old lady present, she didn't want a confrontation.

She suppressed her impatience and explained, "I'm taking an elderly lady home. We took a wrong turn."

Isabella blurted out, "Isn't this your husband's grandmother? How could she possibly live here?"

Evelyn retorted, "Why couldn't she? Do you own this neighborhood?"

Isabella was speechless.

Linda cursed angrily, "Stop pretending! How could that pauper husband's grandmother afford to live here?"

She turned directly to the old lady. "You old hag, tell me then, what's your house number?"

Evelyn frowned and was about to speak.

But the old lady stood up. "I remember now! I live right here! Granddaughter-in-law, let's go home!"

She pulled Evelyn toward the grand Vance gate.

They were about a hundred yards from the gate.

After just two steps, Isabella spoke. "Evelyn, after all your excuses, you're still using the old lady as a reason to go to the Vance house?"

Evelyn stopped in her tracks and stared ahead.

The Vance estate?

Although she had secretly wondered when she saw the impressive gate...

She couldn't connect the polite "grandson" on WhatsApp with the cold, ruthless Alexander Vance...

Maybe the old lady was mistaken?

She was about to confirm.

But Linda rushed over and made a grab for the old lady. "You old fool! Spreading lies to beg at the Vance doorstep! How shameless! I won't let you cause trouble at the Vance house!"

Evelyn was alarmed.

She shielded the old lady with one hand and grabbed Linda with the other, shoving her away forcefully.

Her voice was stern. "What are you doing?"

The old lady was frail and couldn't handle being pushed!

Linda stumbled back, steadying herself before screaming, "Ungrateful brat! You hit your own mother for this old hag! I'll call the police! I'll report you for filial impiety!"

Evelyn ignored her.

But the old lady retorted, "My granddaughter-in-law is not impious! You're lying!"

Linda sneered. "You old thing, how poor are you that you have to pimp out your granddaughter-in-law to other men? Huh? Does she give you a cut? Or is that your family business? You serviced plenty of men in your youth too, didn't you? You lecherous old—"

"Shut up!!" Evelyn shouted.

She quickly looked at the old lady.

The old lady, who had never been insulted like this, was trembling with rage.

Her hand pressed against her chest.

Her body shook uncontrollably.

She began to slump toward the ground.

Evelyn hurriedly caught her. "Grandma! What's wrong?"

The old lady took deep breaths, unable to speak.

Evelyn immediately reached into the old lady's pocket for the emergency heart pills.

She opened the bottle cap only to find it empty!!

Her pupils contracted.

The old woman's body was too weak for CPR.

Medicine was best.

She looked sharply at the grand gate.

The Vance house must have medicine!

Even if the old lady wasn't a Vance, she was a neighbor.

They wouldn't refuse to save a life!

Evelyn picked up the old lady. "Grandma, don't be afraid. I'll take you to get medicine!"

But Isabella grabbed her arm forcefully. "Evelyn, don't do this. Playing the elderly card when buying clothes was bad enough, but how can you try to scam the Vances? They won't let you in..."

She looked at the old lady, her eyes dark.

The old woman looked terrible, like she really might not make it.

If she died just like that, Evelyn's husband would surely hate her!

Let's see how she seduces men then!

Evelyn was furious.

Rage boiled in her peach-blossom eyes.

She lifted her leg to kick Isabella.

"Get lost!" Her voice was hoarse.

The next moment, her leg was tightly hugged.

Linda sat on the ground, clutching her legs without any dignity.

"You think you're the only ones who can fake an accident? I can do it too! I'm dying! I'm being beaten to death by my own daughter!"

"My chest hurts so much! I can't take it!"

"I'd rather die today than let this old hag scam the Vances!"

Evelyn trembled all over, her expression grim.

She kicked Linda away and elbowed Isabella in the stomach.

She strode forward!

Isabella bent over, sweating from the pain.

Linda, ignoring the pain, rushed up again to hug her legs, making a scene.

"Help! Murder!"

Evelyn, mindful of the old lady in her arms, couldn't break free immediately!

Just then!

A black Bentley slowly drove up.

Alexander Vance got out of the car, his voice sharp. "What is going on here?"

Isabella quickly spoke. "Mr. Vance, it's Evelyn. She insists on bringing a dying old woman to scam the Vances. It's my fault for not stopping her..."

Hearing this, Evelyn slowly turned around.

Seeing the grandmother in her arms, Alexander's pupils constricted violently.
