"In this house, Father is the master!"
Cecilia pretended to hesitate.
"Auntie, Great-Grandmother is my family too."
"You're not doubting my ability to care for her, are you?"
Richard sneered.
"Why would she doubt you?"
"You helped Grandmother get that important clinical trial slot."
"You're a hero of the Vance family!"
Cecilia waved her hand.
"Dad, don't call me a hero."
"I was just fulfilling my filial duty."
She looked seriously at Evelyn.
"Auntie, it's not that I insist on living here."
"The lab from New York is sending people to collect samples."
"They need to track Great-Grandmother's medication data."
"They only gave us the slot because of the Truman family's influence."
"They have to stay in this courtyard."
"It wouldn't be appropriate for you and Uncle to remain."
"After all, they're my friends."
"It's more suitable for me to host them."
"You and Uncle will understand, right?"
Evelyn sneered.
"The New York lab doesn't operate on connections."
"You think highly of yourself."
The list of applicants from New York had arrived last night.
She was still screening them.
Cecilia couldn't possibly have invited anyone.
Richard was furious.
"Evelyn Ross, what do you know?"
"Cecilia's fiancé is from the Truman family in New York!"
"Do you know what the Five Great Families represent?"
"What power they hold?"
"A small lab is nothing!"
Robert scoffed coldly.
"I always said Alexander married beneath him."
"Minor family trash."
"She thinks the world is all about fairness."
"She's never seen true power at the top."
"She relies on imagination."
"Ignorant!"
Richard mocked her.
"It reminds me of a story."
"Ancient peasants guessing how the emperor lived."
"They said the emperor farmed with a golden hoe."
"He ate white rice and big steamed buns every day."
"He could finish one bowl and throw away another..."
He looked at Evelyn.
"Alexander's wife, you know nothing."
"Stop embarrassing yourself here."
Evelyn found it deeply ironic.
These capitalists really thought money could move heaven?
Robert frowned.
"Long hair, short见识!"
"How could Alexander fall for someone of your background?"
"I always said marriages should be between equals!"
"With your behavior, Alexander will tire of you soon!"
Richard threatened her.
"Evelyn Ross, obey Father quietly."
"You might still have a place in the Vance family."
"Otherwise, Alexander can divorce you with a single contract!"
"Your birth family has no power or influence."
"If he kicks you out with nothing, no one will back you up!"
Evelyn was about to retort.
A cold voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"Who says she has no one to back her up?!"
Evelyn spun around.
A tall figure strode into the room, bringing a chill with him.
His black wool coat accentuated his broad frame.
His gaze swept the room before settling on Evelyn.
He approached quickly, his voice low. "How is Mrs. Ashcroft?"
Alexander was back.
He had messaged last night that his grandmother was stable, though still unconscious.
That had allowed Evelyn to stay with Sophia without worry.
"She's been discharged," she replied softly. "Don't worry."
"Good."
Alexander turned to Richard and Robert, his voice icy. "My marriage is none of your concern. I am responsible for my own wife. Even without her family's support, she has me to rely on!"
Robert sneered. "Who wants to bother with your affairs? A cold-blooded man like you marries an equally unfilial woman! Your grandmother didn't wake last night. We were all there, except her!"
Alexander explained, "Mrs. Ashcroft was hospitalized. Evelyn was attending to her."
Richard scoffed. "Once married into the Vance family, she is a Vance! A mother she just met? Was she afraid of missing out on an inheritance if the woman died? How shortsighted! Can't she tell who's more important, her own mother or her grandmother?"
Evelyn's fists clenched tightly.
Inheritance?
This was a curse and an insult to Sophia!
Her eyes turned frosty.
"Enough!" Alexander's voice was sharp.
Robert frowned. "Who are you telling to shut up? He's your brother!"
Alexander's tone was dark. "If I hear him insult Mrs. Ashcroft one more time, he can start thinking about how to divide his own inheritance."
His ruthless demeanor made Richard immediately fall silent.
Richard knew his brother meant every word.
Robert slammed his hand on the armrest, about to erupt, when Fiona rushed out, beaming. "The Madam is awake!"
Evelyn and Alexander immediately left the others and hurried to the bedroom.
The elderly lady looked refreshed after her sleep.
She smiled at the doorway and said to Alexander, "You rascal, where have you been?"
Alexander stepped forward. "I took a call."
"I see."
Eleanor took Evelyn's hand. "This must be my daughter-in-law! Little Ye, this brat doesn't know how to treat people right. If he wrongs you, tell me. I'll set him straight! Don't you dare run off in a huff!"
Evelyn was stunned.
She and Alexander exchanged a look, then turned to Eleanor. "Grandmother, who are we?"
"Hey! You rascal, I'm your mother! Why are you calling me grandmother?"
Eleanor swatted Alexander's arm.
Alexander stood frozen.
He stared at his grandmother, his fists slowly clenching.
Eleanor held Evelyn's hand tighter. "Little Ye, don't just stand there. Sit down. You're pregnant... Boy or girl, I'll love this child forever once they're born!"
Alexander's eyes reddened slightly.
Even though she had forgotten him, his grandmother still cared.
Robert approached, sounding relieved. "Mother actually remembers me..."
Richard quickly added, "Of course, Father. You are her only son! She dotes on Alexander only because he's your son..."
A smile appeared on Robert's face.
All these years, the old lady had only had eyes for Alexander, ignoring the main family entirely. He never thought she would still remember him in her confusion.
Robert pushed Alexander aside and leaned closer to the bed. "Mother, how are you feeling?"
Eleanor frowned. "Old man? Aren't you dead? Back from the grave? A zombie?"
Robert's mouth twitched. "Mother, I'm Robert."
"Nonsense!" Eleanor waved her hand, pointing at Alexander. "My son is handsome and dashing. How could it be you, an old codger! You look like trouble!"
Robert fell silent.
Several people in the room stifled laughs, but Evelyn frowned slightly.
The old lady's Alzheimer's was worsening. Her memory had regressed to when Robert was young... She needed medication, fast!
She took out her phone to message the New York contact, but a WhatsApp arrived first: [President Nora, we have arrived at the Vance residence in San Francisco. Delivering the medication immediately!]
Researcher Nora's Chinese transliteration was Nuòlā, and she was called President Nora domestically.
Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief.
The medication would arrive today.
Cecilia spoke softly, "Grandfather, don't be upset. Great-Grandmother is just ill..."
Robert sighed. "I wonder if she'll ever remember me."
His feelings toward his mother were complicated.
His father died early, and his mother raised him alone. The Vance Group started with her hardware business. Later, they disagreed on management philosophy, and she stepped back.
But several company veterans were her old subordinates.
Eleanor held thirty percent of Vance Group's shares and had a group of loyal followers.
Alexander quickly gained control after returning from abroad solely due to her support!
Robert had mixed feelings of love and resentment toward his mother!
He looked at Cecilia. "Is this medication you mentioned really effective?"
Cecilia nodded. "Grandfather, all fifteen specialized drugs developed by Researcher Nora are on the market with excellent feedback. She has been researching this Alzheimer's drug for a long time..."
Her phone suddenly rang.
Cecilia looked down, her face lighting up. "Grandfather, the lab team is at the door. I'll go greet them!"
Cecilia hurried out.
Robert watched her leave, then glanced at Alexander and Evelyn, snorting. "You should be nicer to Cecilia from now on. Especially you, Alexander. She secured this hard-to-get medication for your grandmother. You owe her."
Evelyn laughed coldly. "That's not right. Is Grandmother only Alexander's grandmother? Isn't she Cecilia's great-grandmother too?"
She found it utterly ridiculous.
Robert glared at her. "No manners! How dare you talk back to your elder!"
Richard quickly fanned the flames. "Father, don't be angry. Alexander's wife is just jealous that you favor Cecilia..."
"Evelyn, if you could get your hands on specialized medication like Cecilia, I'd favor you too!" Robert sneered. "But you have no connections, no family background. Can you?"
Evelyn narrowed her eyes. "Who says I can't?"
Before the words faded, Cecilia led the research institute staff through the door.
