She remembered?
Evelyn's eyes lit up.
Was the Alzheimer's medication working this fast?
It had only been two days.
She quickly calmed down.
The medication stimulated nerve regeneration and regulated bodily functions.
Eleanor Vance would gradually regain her memories.
She had just happened to recall that specific period.
"How did we get our marriage certificate?" Evelyn asked softly.
Eleanor was about to speak.
Cecilia Evans' excited voice came from outside the door. "Great-grandma is awake!"
Eleanor paused and looked toward the door. "Who's outside?"
Evelyn explained, "The second branch of the family is here to see you."
Eleanor nodded. "It's my second brother and his family."
She patted Evelyn's hand. "The story of our marriage is a long one. I'll tell you after they leave."
"Okay."
Just then, Elder Howard Vance and Robert Vance entered the room.
"Sister-in-law!" Elder Howard called out.
Eleanor smiled. "Why did they drag you all the way here? I'm fine now!"
Elder Howard studied her carefully.
Eleanor was the respected elder sister-in-law.
His older brother had passed away unexpectedly when he was only fifteen.
Their parents had died early.
He thought his sister-in-law would remarry and take the children with her.
He expected to drop out of school and work.
But his sister-in-law supported the entire family.
She told him, "Don't worry about school. I'll find a way to pay your tuition."
She set up a roadside stall while carrying Alexander.
She endured many hardships.
Society was turbulent back then.
Local thugs came to collect protection money.
His sister-in-law grabbed a kitchen knife and swung it wildly. "I have no money, but I do have a life to give!"
The thugs said they would return.
That night, they jumped into the courtyard and threw stones at the windows.
His sister-in-law always kept a knife under her pillow.
He was young and timid.
He said, "Just give them the money!"
His sister-in-law shook her head. "No. This money is for your schooling."
That was only the smallest of their troubles.
Later, his sister-in-law opened a shop.
The business grew larger and larger.
He joined the company after graduation.
They witnessed the establishment of the Vance Group together.
Some subordinates said a woman couldn't be chairman.
They urged him to seize power.
He fired those subordinates immediately.
Other women might not be capable.
But his sister-in-law certainly was.
Later, his sister-in-law and Robert had disagreements.
His sister-in-law withdrew from the company and handed full control to Robert.
Elder Howard supported Robert.
To ensure Robert's sole authority, he resigned and returned to his hometown.
After learning this, his sister-in-law built him a large estate with high walls in his hometown.
Remembering the past, Elder Howard's eyes reddened.
His hands trembled as he held Eleanor's. "Sister-in-law, you must take care of yourself. I still want to have a sister-in-law to call when I'm ninety!"
Tears welled in Eleanor's eyes.
She had been good to her brother, and he had never let her down.
Her brother was one of the few university students of his time.
If he had stayed in New York and joined a government agency.
He would surely have reached heights others could only dream of.
But he gave up his secure job without hesitation to return and help her support the company.
Giving him shares was only right.
Later, she entrusted Alexander to her brother.
Her brother ensured Alexander was never harmed again.
Eleanor laughed. "That won't do. In ten years, I'll be ninety-six. I'll be an old monster!"
Elder Howard said, "May you live a long life. You have many years ahead. You still need to help Alexander raise his son!"
Eleanor smiled.
They chatted for a few more minutes.
Elder Howard spoke again. "They scared me, saying you were on death's door and that I should come see you. But you look perfectly fine!"
Robert interjected, "Uncle, regarding that, it's all thanks to Cecilia."
He motioned for Cecilia to step forward.
He explained what had happened.
He concluded with emotion, "She's engaged to the Truman family. Normally, she should avoid asking favors, as it might make her lose face with them."
Cecilia immediately said, "Grandpa, don't say that. This is my great-grandmother. I should do everything I can for her."
Elder Howard praised her. "Good child. You are a good child! Don't worry. I will give you a generous dowry for your wedding. You will not lose face with the Truman family! Our Vance family may not be as powerful as the Trumans, but we are not far behind!"
Cecilia pretended to be shy.
Richard Evans spoke up. "Uncle, since you are here, I would like to ask a favor for Cecilia."
Elder Howard asked, "What is it?"
Richard explained slowly, "As you know, Cecilia is my love child. She has always been filial. I would like you to add her name to the family registry."
Being added to the registry meant gaining inheritance rights.
Elder Howard hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Given her devotion to her great-grandmother, it is only right. I will add her name when I return."
He looked at Cecilia. "Once you are officially a Vance, remember to abide by the law and conduct yourself properly. Understand?"
Cecilia smiled. "I understand. Don't worry."
Richard nudged Robert's back.
Robert understood and spoke directly. "Since she's being added to the registry, she is a legitimate granddaughter of the Vance family. Moreover, she is marrying into the New York Truman family. Uncle, I think she should receive some shares as a dowry."
Elder Howard nodded. "That is appropriate."
Robert was pleased and was about to speak.
Elder Howard asked, "How much do you plan to give her?"
Robert's mouth twitched. He coughed. "It's not me…"
Elder Howard looked at Richard. "Then…"
Richard laughed awkwardly. "I only have ten percent of the shares. I would like to give some to my daughter, but I also have a son…"
Elder Howard was confused. "Then you want me to give them?"
The members of the second branch who had come with Elder Howard looked at Robert and Richard with displeasure.
The main and second branches had long since separated.
Elder Howard only owned fifteen percent of the Vance Group shares.
Giving them to the main branch? Impossible!
Robert, who still relied on his cousins, quickly waved his hands. "Of course not! Your shares should go to the second branch."
Elder Howard finally understood. He looked at Eleanor.
Robert made it clear. "Mom previously promised that younger family members would receive shares when they married… Last time, when Julian married, his wife treated Mom poorly, so she didn't give any. Now Cecilia is marrying into the Truman family, which is a significant event for our family. Mom, how much do you plan to give Cecilia?"
His words were reasonable and difficult to refute.
