Alexander Vance understood Evelyn Ross was comforting him.
He followed her lead and changed the subject.
Evelyn spoke softly. "I was trafficked as a child too."
She paused. "I was locked up with an older brother back then…"
Trafficked?
Alexander was taken aback. "How old were you?"
Evelyn was about to answer.
Sophia Watson on the hospital bed suddenly started coughing violently.
Her body twisted and struggled.
Doctors rushed over immediately. "Not good! Blood is entering the trachea!"
"Arrange for a thoracotomy immediately!"
Sophia Watson received her fifth critical condition notice.
Alexander's attention was instantly captured.
He stared intently toward the hospital bed.
Evelyn also set aside her casual chatting mood.
Time passed slowly.
Three hours.
Five hours.
Sophia Watson was finally saved once more.
When the doctors announced she was temporarily out of danger.
Evelyn let out a long sigh of relief.
She turned to look at Alexander.
The man's tightly clenched fist finally relaxed slowly.
Evelyn gently patted the back of his hand.
Alexander gave a bitter smile.
Sophia Watson had multiple fractures throughout her body.
Multiple internal organ ruptures.
After being wheeled out of the operating room.
She seemed to gain some consciousness.
Even while unconscious.
She still waved her arms and called out. "Alexander…"
Her thrashing made it impossible for medical staff to administer IV.
The doctor held down her hand.
She continued to struggle and call out. "Big brother…"
Trying hard to grab onto something.
The doctor urgently looked at Alexander. "Mr. Vance, we must calm her down."
"Otherwise, the life we just saved won't be preserved!"
Alexander remained silent for a long time.
Finally, he stepped forward. "I'm here."
The restless Sophia Watson immediately quieted down.
She seemed to sense the voice.
Subconsciously grabbing Alexander's hand.
Alexander tried to pull back.
Sophia Watson immediately frowned. "Big brother…"
This address made him recall the past.
Alexander's movement halted.
The doctor looked at him with pleading eyes again.
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
His gaze hesitant and conflicted.
Evelyn clenched her fists.
She didn't speak.
Watching Alexander accompany Sophia Watson into the ICU.
Evelyn stood outside the ICU.
Looking inside through a glass door.
They were only a few meters apart.
But that glass seemed to separate two different worlds.
Doctors and nurses shuttled back and forth.
Checking vital signs every half hour.
Alexander couldn't hear outside sounds inside the ICU.
But Evelyn heard the experts' discussion.
"It's a miracle she was saved!"
"Mainly because Mr. Vance is willing to spend money."
"Her entire body essentially got four blood transfusions."
"One bleeding point was guessed blindly, and we actually got it right."
"But she'll be disabled for life."
"Why would she do this to herself…"
"She came from a mental institution."
"Has severe depression, simply can't get out of it."
"Her only hope for living is Mr. Vance."
"Mr. Vance got married and stopped visiting her, so she attempted suicide."
Others asked curiously. "What's their relationship?"
"Rumored to be lovers. Mr. Vance has been treating her illness for five or six years."
"Always abroad."
"Now he transferred his affection to someone else?"
"Anyone would struggle with a mentally ill girlfriend."
"It's normal to transfer affection."
"But it still seems somewhat heartless."
"He's the patient's only hope."
"The patient couldn't handle the breakup."
"Mr. Vance publicly announced his marriage long ago."
"Mrs. Vance wasn't happy about it."
"Mr. Vance said he wouldn't see her anymore, so she jumped."
"When she first arrived, it was simply unbearable to look at…"
The group chatted as they walked away.
Evelyn tightened her jaw.
Wanting to say something but not knowing how to begin.
She understood Alexander.
His decisive choice of her moved her deeply.
But seeing Sophia Watson lying on the hospital bed with her own eyes.
Even she felt her heart race.
It was a human life.
Yesterday, they were arguing vividly.
Today, her life hung by a thread.
But were childhood promises really that important?
Should Alexander be dragged down by promises for life?
Evelyn thought of that older brother.
She had saved him.
He promised he would come marry her.
Take her to his home.
Although he never came all these years.
That sentence became her hope for survival.
Growing up, she learned relying on others isn't as good as relying on oneself.
She was doing well now.
Completely moved on.
If she weren't strong enough.
She might not have made it through.
She lowered her head in quiet contemplation.
"What are you thinking about?"
Alexander's voice suddenly sounded.
Evelyn looked up.
The man stood before her, having arrived at some point.
He looked tired, powerless in his eyes.
Evelyn didn't want to pressure him.
Didn't mention "you said yesterday you wouldn't see her again."
She was never a tragic female lead.
Evelyn blinked and suddenly spoke. "Thinking about the little brother I saved when I was young."
Alexander sat down beside her. "What about him?"
Evelyn smiled. "He said he would marry me, and even gave a betrothal gift."
"But now I don't need it anymore. Should return the betrothal gift to him."
Alexander paused slightly. "What betrothal gift?"
