Don't Get a Divorce!
As Alexander Vance's car drove out of the estate gates, the Vance family's private car and a delivery van arrived one after the other.
Alexander cast an indifferent glance at the family vehicle, paying it no mind.
Elder Howard Vance often sent people to pay respects to Eleanor Vance or deliver items, always heading directly to her residence.
As for the delivery van…
With over a hundred people living on the estate, it was likely a package for some staff member or butler.
His car passed the two vehicles…
After he had driven away, the door of the family car opened.
The driver jumped out, looking in the direction Alexander had left, and urgently asked the guard, "Was that Mr. Vance who just left?"
The guard nodded. "Yes."
The driver immediately grew anxious. "I'm here to deliver an important document to him. Where is Mr. Vance going?"
The guard shrugged. "How would I know the master's business!"
Realizing he had asked the wrong person, the driver quickly got back in the car, drove into the estate, and headed straight for Eleanor Vance's residence.
The delivery van tried to follow but was stopped by the guard. "Whose delivery is this? You can't enter empty-handed."
The delivery person: "…"
He was ruthlessly stopped at the gate!
After a moment's hesitation, he sent a message to his boss: [Boss, I delivered your package to Sunset Village first, but that Mr. Stubborn Fifth is in San Francisco. I followed the driver here to San Francisco. This is a wealthy family's estate; they won't let me in.]
Evelyn Ross quickly replied: [Just come back. No need to wait.]
Since she had left her contact information, her eldest brother should contact her once he saw it… right?
Evelyn was momentarily lost in thought.
But she quickly dismissed the idea.
She glanced at Alexander.
The man's expression was cold and stern, remaining silent the entire way.
The car soon arrived at City Hall.
Evelyn got out first. "It's open. Shall we go in?"
Alexander didn't move.
Evelyn sighed softly, holding the car door open as she quietly watched him.
They were at a stalemate for nearly a minute before Alexander slowly got out of the car.
Evelyn walked towards City Hall.
After taking two steps, she sensed something was wrong.
Turning back, she saw Alexander looking up at the City Hall building with an unfamiliar gaze.
Of course.
He had been unconscious when they got their marriage certificate and had no memory of this place.
She walked over to Alexander.
Then she heard the man say, "We can't get a divorce today."
Evelyn was stunned. "Why?"
Was Alexander willing to let Sophia Watson die rather than separate from her?
As she was thinking this, the man said in a low voice, "I forgot to bring the marriage certificate."
Evelyn: !
She glanced at Alexander and coughed lightly. "Then let's go home and get it."
Alexander: "I have a meeting this morning."
Evelyn: "Then this afternoon."
"Afternoon, I have a business engagement."
Evelyn: ?
She looked at him with an amused smile. "Mr. Vance, do you know what you look like right now?"
Alexander felt somewhat uncomfortable under her gaze, averting his eyes guiltily. "What?"
"Like a child throwing a tantrum for candy!"
Alexander stared at her. "If I really threw a tantrum, would you not get a divorce?"
"No."
Evelyn sighed helplessly. "Marriage isn't a game, Alexander. If we don't get divorced, when do you plan to resolve the issue with Sophia Watson? Can I wait a month? Three months? But can you make me wait three or five years?"
Alexander's jaw tightened.
If her illness could be cured, it would have been cured in the past five years…
And if he cut ties with her before she recovered, Sophia Watson would commit suicide…
Alexander was caught in a dilemma.
In the short term, he either had to harden his heart and watch her die, or there was no solution.
But he couldn't just watch his savior die because of him.
He looked at Evelyn again.
A carefree woman like her, if not bound by this absurd marriage, would have long since left the Vance family.
If they divorced, she might truly never return…
This thought made his heart flutter with panic.
He said in a low voice, "Evelyn, I really don't have time today. Let's come back tomorrow, alright?"
Evelyn looked at him quietly and finally nodded. "Alright."
Alexander offered her the car. "You go home first. I'm going to the company…"
But Evelyn shook her head. "In my current status, it's not appropriate for me to return to the Vance family."
Alexander was stunned, his heart growing even more panicked.
He clenched his fists, wanting to say something but not knowing how to phrase it.
In the end, he just responded and got into the car.
His retreating figure carried a hint of embarrassment.
Evelyn watched the car drive away, lowered her eyes, and sighed softly.
She wanted to say there was no need to be so conflicted.
If they were truly meant to be, this deadlock would eventually be broken.
Perhaps in a year or so, Sophia Watson's illness would be cured?
Or maybe…
She didn't want to think about the other possibilities.
Evelyn took a taxi back to the Ashcroft residence.
As soon as she entered the living room, she heard William Ashcroft's voice. "If you're worried, why not call and ask?"
Sophia Ashcroft immediately refused. "That would just put pressure on Evelyn."
Hearing this, Evelyn understood they had seen the news.
These days, reporters were everywhere.
Keeping something confidential was truly difficult.
She pushed the door open and entered.
Sophia said in surprise, "Evelyn, you…"
"Mom, I'm planning to get a divorce." Evelyn didn't hide it.
William immediately objected. "Nonsense! How can you get a divorce? Husband and wife should face difficulties together!"
Evelyn remained silent.
William looked somewhat embarrassed and turned to Sophia. "Sophia, talk some sense into her."
But Sophia said, "Alright. This home will always welcome you back!"
William was stunned. "Sophia, you…"
Sophia looked at him. "Some things can be faced together, but when a third party is involved, someone always has to step back. I don't want Evelyn to get hurt in this love triangle. I respect her choice. Evelyn, the upstairs room isn't renovated yet. Sleep with me tonight."
William was momentarily dazed upon hearing this.
Then he realized that Mrs. Ashcroft had always been so decisive.
She had always been like this…
As for why she could tolerate Linda Lowell's existence.
Of course, it was because… she didn't love him.
A trace of self-mockery flashed in William's eyes.
Neither Evelyn nor Sophia noticed his unusual expression.
Sophia took Evelyn's hand and went upstairs. "We mother and daughter have never slept together before. It's a good chance to talk tonight."
"Alright."
Evelyn suddenly said, "Mom, I want to eat the tomato and egg noodles you make for lunch."
Sophia was taken aback and laughed. "Silly child, the noodles I make aren't tasty…"
When she was younger, she had also cooked, wanting to be a good wife and mother.
But the noodles she made were disliked by Isabella.
Yet Evelyn had always looked on with envy.
Such a simple thing, Linda had never done for her.
She really wanted to taste Sophia's cooking.
She insisted stubbornly, "But I want to eat it."
Sophia paused. "…Alright."
Mother and daughter spent the day at the Ashcroft residence.
At noon, they ate the longed-for noodles.
At night, they shared a bed.
Between Evelyn and Sophia, it was as if those twenty-two years apart had never happened.
They were as intimate as any ordinary mother and daughter.
Evelyn understood that Sophia was being considerate of her feelings.
But the intimacy between them couldn't be faked.
Late at night, she took out her phone.
Suddenly, she noticed an unread text message.
Nowadays was the digital age.
Most people contacted each other through WhatsApp or other means, rarely sending text messages.
Evelyn's inbox was mostly filled with ads and spam.
Thus, this text message stood out.
A strange number sent a short sentence: [Do not divorce Alexander Vance.]
So mysterious…
It must be the person who had arranged her marriage to Alexander!
Evelyn got up and walked to the balcony, dialing the number back.
