Chapter 253

Cars streamed by in both directions.

Evelyn turned her head to look.

Zack Davis had already grabbed her arm, shooting her a wary glance.

Evelyn said nothing, simply gazing calmly at Thomas Watson.

Seeing her resolute attitude, Zack immediately fawned at Thomas. "Mr. Watson, we came from New York for the funeral. The baby needs milk, but we have no hot water... The mother just wanted to ask if the Vance residence has hot water..."

Evelyn offered no further explanation, just watched Thomas quietly.

To her surprise, Thomas merely glanced at her and said, "The Vances have plenty of hot water. Should I have someone bring some over?"

Evelyn frowned slightly.

What did Thomas mean by that?

Did he not recognize her?

Confusion swirled in Evelyn's mind.

She wanted to speak but held her tongue.

In that moment, countless doubts flooded her thoughts, making her extra cautious.

Thinking carefully, the truth about her marriage had suddenly been revealed.

She had inexplicably gained a twin sister.

Grace Nan had just met her, and they both immediately faced mortal danger.

This meant the "they" Grace mentioned who wanted them dead had been watching her all along?

Had Thomas noticed something? Was that why he didn't dare acknowledge her?

As her mind raced, Zack was already waving his hands in fear, his posture humble. "No, no, I'll just go with you to get some!"

He snatched the baby bottle from Evelyn's hand.

He was about to tell her to return to the car when horns blared from behind their vehicle in the procession.

Zack turned and saw the cars ahead had already moved.

Their car remained stationary.

The vehicles backed up behind them were all expensive luxury cars.

Zack didn't dare delay.

Thomas also frowned and asked, "Whose car is that?"

Zack immediately offered a sycophantic smile to Thomas. "Mine, mine! I'll move it right away..."

Thomas said impatiently, "Let your wife come with me to get water then!"

Hearing this, Zack glanced at Evelyn.

Uneasy, he said, "Then my mother will go with her. She was injured just a few days ago..."

Mrs. Davis immediately got out from the passenger seat.

She smiled obsequiously at Thomas and grabbed Evelyn's arm. "Mr. Watson, let's go, let's go..."

Thomas led the two to the security guard's post.

There was a water dispenser there.

Evelyn took the bottle to fill it with water.

Mrs. Davis wanted to ingratiate herself with Thomas, but his grim expression made her too afraid to speak.

While Mrs. Davis was distractedly looking around, Evelyn suddenly moved closer to Thomas.

She asked in a low voice, "What's going on?"

Thomas furrowed his brow and looked at her puzzled. "What?"

Evelyn was taken aback.

She wanted to say more, but Mrs. Davis immediately approached and grabbed her arm.

She said warily, "What are you doing? Don't speak out of turn!"

Then she pulled Evelyn's hand and said to Thomas, "Mr. Watson, thank you for your trouble. We'll return to the car now!"

Evelyn stared at Thomas.

But he simply nodded, his gaze vacant and fixed ahead, his expression full of grief.

Evelyn was bewildered as Mrs. Davis dragged her out of the security guard's lounge.

She kept looking back at Thomas.

She was utterly confused, unable to understand why Thomas didn't recognize her.

Mrs. Davis sneered, "What were you doing just now? Trying to cozy up to Mr. Watson? Look at the timing! Didn't Zack say on the way here? Mr. Watson was very close to Mrs. Vance. They were friends. He's in pain right now. Why are you shamelessly throwing yourself at him?"

Mrs. Davis released her arm and scoffed, "Zack said you pretend to be aloof and dislike socializing. I don't think you dislike it at all. You just haven't seen real wealth before, have you? Now that you've seen it, you're eagerly rushing forward."

"Why don't you take a good look at yourself in the mirror? See what you look like right now, still trying to get close to people? At the very least, wash your face! Aren't you embarrassed?"

Mrs. Davis curled her lip in disdain and returned to the car with Evelyn.

Hearing this, Evelyn was slightly stunned.

Wash her face?

She subconsciously pulled out her phone.

Using the black screen as a mirror, she took a quick glance and froze instantly.

No wonder Thomas didn't recognize her.

Her face was entirely purple, clearly coated with thick iodine.

Her whole face was almost unrecognizable...

She then remembered escaping from the boat underwater.

Floating debris had likely hit her body, leaving some scratches on her face.

So they had applied iodine for disinfection?

Evelyn: "..."

She had just spent all that time thinking it was some conspiracy, pondering so many possibilities.

And it was just this?

"What are you still standing there for? Get in the car!"

Mrs. Davis had already gotten into the car and shouted impatiently.

As Evelyn approached, Mrs. Davis threw her a wet wipe. "Wipe that face of yours clean! Don't embarrass yourself here!"

Evelyn didn't refuse.

After getting in the car, she first used the water she'd fetched to prepare formula for little Chloe and gave it to her.

Then, using her phone as a mirror, she wiped the iodine off her face.

The iodine must have been applied by a nurse at the hospital two days ago.

She had been unconscious for the past two days, so no one had cleaned it for her.

After wiping for a while, some traces remained, but her original features were somewhat visible.

While she was doing this, Zack had already driven into the Vance estate.

Security guards directed them to park in the parking lot.

Evelyn followed Zack towards the main house where the funeral was being held...

The funeral was set up in the main house.

There were accounting offices on both sides handling the funeral gifts.

People lined up, first adding their monetary gifts, then proceeding to the funeral hall to pay their respects...

Little Chloe fell asleep after her milk.

Zack had Mrs. Davis stay with her in the car.

He and Evelyn walked to the accounting area.

The Vance family's butler was in charge of keeping accounts.

The butler's eyes were slightly red as he buried his head in the record books.

Evelyn and Zack quickly queued up and reached him.

Zack was a bit nervous.

He coughed and said to Evelyn, "Grace, you've never seen a scene like this, right? Don't be nervous. Later, just say you were Mrs. Vance's classmate..."

He whispered instructions.

Finally, it was their turn.

The butler asked, "May I ask who you are?"

Zack immediately nudged Evelyn.

Evelyn glanced at him and said softly, "Grace Nan."

Hearing this name, the butler paused slightly.

He subconsciously looked up.

When he saw Evelyn, the butler was completely stunned.

He stared at her in disbelief. "You, you... Madam?"
