Evelyn clutched the divorce certificate tightly.
The paper's edge dug painfully into her fingertips.
A month of endurance had finally paid off.
The property was secure.
Chloe's custody was also hers.
If her sister could see this from heaven, she would be comforted, right?
Evelyn's nose tingled, and her eyes gradually reddened.
Zack Davis stared at her slightly reddened eyes, suddenly feeling dazed.
The Grace from university was always timid, her eyes moist and deer-like when she looked at people.
Now, that face had shed its youthful innocence, but it was even more captivating.
He spoke without thinking, "Don't be sad... I'll come to see you and the child often..."
Kelsey Lopez pinched his arm sharply and screeched, "Grace! Stop pretending to be pitiful and seducing people! You're divorced now, get lost, hear me?"
Zack frowned, wanting to argue, but Kelsey immediately glared at him. "What? Can't bear it? Then go accompany her in paying off the debts!"
Zack shut his mouth instantly.
Kelsey raised her chin triumphantly and pointed at Evelyn. "Get lost! Don't delay me and Zack from getting our marriage license!"
Evelyn lowered her eyes, hiding the cold glint within.
She couldn't resort to violence.
Grace's persona was weak and easily bullied.
But she had other methods.
She took half a step back and suddenly raised her voice. "Zack, are you planning to finalize the divorce and remarriage all in one day?"
The hall instantly fell silent.
All eyes focused on the three of them.
The red divorce certificates were clutched in Evelyn and Zack's hands.
Kelsey stood close to Zack, her makeup impeccable, her clothes brand new.
Anyone could see the situation clearly.
Immediately, people began to murmur. "Remarrying right after the divorce? That woman must be the mistress!"
"The ex-wife's eyes are red from crying, how pitiful..."
"How dare the mistress be so arrogant? Where does she get the nerve?"
An older woman rushed over and spat fiercely at Kelsey. "Disgusting! Are you proud of stealing someone else's husband?"
The woman pulled Evelyn over. "Don't be afraid, dear! I'll help you curse this wretched pair!"
Kelsey, her collar soiled with spit, shrieked in disgust. "You crazy hag! What are you doing?"
The woman was thoroughly enraged. She grabbed Kelsey's hair and forced her down. "I'm cursing you! Shameless mistress!"
Kelsey struggled and yelled, "Let go! I'll call the police!"
The woman's relative immediately held up a phone to record. "Go ahead! Let the whole internet see your true face! Forcing the divorce and daring to remarry the same day? Have you no shame?"
Kelsey panicked instantly.
The woman dragged her and pushed her towards Evelyn. "Apologize to her!"
Kelsey gritted her teeth and glared at Zack.
But Zack pointed at Evelyn and scolded, "Grace! If you didn't want the divorce, you should have said so! Hiring people to cause trouble, what kind of trick is that?"
Before he finished speaking, the woman slapped him. "Cheating and you still have the nerve? Asking for a beating!"
Blood immediately streaked across Zack's face. Terrified, he covered his head and fled, rushing out of the City Hall without looking back.
Kelsey stamped her foot and shouted, "Zack! We haven't gotten the license yet!"
Zack shouted from afar, "Another day! I can't stand this embarrassment!"
Kelsey trembled with rage.
She straightened her disheveled hair and glared viciously at Evelyn. "Zack wanted the divorce, what does it have to do with me? She was the one who couldn't keep him! Even her mother-in-law disliked her! Zack's mother adores me!"
The woman looked at Evelyn sympathetically. "Dear, your mother-in-law is truly awful..."
Evelyn shook her head gently. "Thank you, ma'am."
She turned to Kelsey, a faint smile curling her lips. "Since your future mother-in-law likes you so much, I wish you a long and happy union. You must endure it."
Over the past month, she had indulged Mrs. Davis into becoming excessively picky and difficult.
With her, the submissive ex-daughter-in-law, as a comparison, Kelsey's future days would likely be chaotic.
Evelyn turned and walked away, her back straight.
No longer mimicking Grace's habitual slouch.
She strode out of the City Hall decisively, as if stepping into a new life.
The scenery sped past the taxi window.
Evelyn gazed absently at the streets.
What was Alexander doing right now?
Was he still at the hospital with his savior?
She smiled bitterly.
Since childhood, she had always walked alone.
Finally, she had found a mother and Alexander...
But Sophia was imprisoned.
Alexander... was no longer hers.
From now on, she would have to walk the path alone again.
The taxi stopped outside the Nan family's small yard.
Evelyn pushed the door open to get out, only to see the nanny trimming plants in the yard.
Chloe's clear laughter came from inside the house.
Evelyn paused slightly. "We have a guest?"
The nanny nodded. "She said she's your friend."
Besides Mina, who else did Grace know?
Puzzled, Evelyn pushed open the door.
Backlit, a tall, lean figure was lifting Chloe high into the air.
The familiar silhouette made her heart stop.
The man turned slowly at the sound.
Sunlight spilled from behind him, outlining his gaunt profile.
A month apart, Alexander had lost weight.
But his eyes burned intensely, locked onto her face.
His voice was hoarse as he spoke, word by word.
"Evelyn, I recognized you."
