Mina Sherwood looked at Chloe Roland in confusion. "Who is he?"
Chloe nervously swallowed.
Yesterday at the Nan residence, she had desperately tried to please Alexander Vance.
But he remained cold-faced, refusing to say more than a few words.
She was about to tell Mina his identity when she felt his icy gaze sweep over her.
Chloe immediately swallowed her words.
Mina remained oblivious. "Who cares who he is? He's handsome and young."
She whispered, "Between us, his stamina is amazing. Much better than that Alexander Vance, who's almost thirty and over the hill."
"And Alexander is a divorced widower!"
Chloe listened in horror and quickly explained, "Actually, Mr. Vance isn't that bad..."
"Tsk tsk." Mina looked her over. "Miss Roland, don't tell me you still have feelings for him? I heard you always wanted to marry him..."
As soon as she finished speaking, Chloe clearly felt the air around Alexander grow colder.
She quickly waved her hands. "No, I don't have those feelings..."
"That's good then. You have enough money. Your parents can support you for life."
"Instead of marrying a divorced man and suffering, learn from Grace Nan. Find yourself a young hunk. Isn't that better?"
Chloe was speechless.
She instinctively retorted, "It's not that I look down on him..."
Mina said, "So you still want him? Fine, then go compete with Penelope Valentine. To each their own!"
Chloe was at a loss for words.
She glanced secretly at Alexander.
The man's face was even darker.
He directly took Evelyn Ross's hand. "Choose your friends carefully."
Chloe felt like she could never clear her name now!
Just then, Mrs. Lawrence came downstairs with the two children.
She looked at Evelyn with delight. "Miss Nan, I never imagined you were actually Mr. Valentine's daughter! No wonder..."
No wonder she had said going to the Vance family would secure the cooperation last time. It had indeed succeeded.
Evelyn pondered for a moment. "There's something I need to ask of you. Please don't publicly disclose my identity for now."
Mina was taken aback.
She thought of what Grace had said about saving her mother and her mysterious background.
She didn't ask further.
But Chloe grew anxious. "What's wrong? Doesn't Mr. Valentine want to acknowledge you? You're better off without that kind of family!"
Mrs. Lawrence also looked at her with concern.
Evelyn smiled. "It's not that. I still have matters to attend to. This identity would restrict me."
"As long as it's not that they don't want you." Chloe breathed a sigh of relief.
Mina teased, "You overthink it. The Valentine family has both Fiona and Penelope. How could they not want their real娇娇?"
She looked at Evelyn again. "But even if we don't tell, have you informed Mr. Valentine? Fiona and Penelope might not keep it secret."
Evelyn wasn't worried. "Do you think they will tell?"
Mina thought about it.
Of course they wouldn't!
As long as the real heiress doesn't return home, they remain the esteemed daughters of the Valentine family.
Once the true heiress returns, these two adopted daughters lose their status.
Understanding this, Mina smiled.
Mrs. Lawrence looked at Evelyn, hesitating to speak.
Evelyn understood her concern and stood up. "The Valentine family has given me the position of school director for the kindergarten."
"I'll take you to cancel Benny's withdrawal now!"
Mrs. Lawrence was overjoyed.
She hadn't expected Evelyn to be so thoughtful and see through her worries.
She had wanted to bring it up earlier but was afraid Evelyn couldn't manage it if she didn't acknowledge her family.
Her eyes filled with gratitude. "Okay!"
Chloe and Mina stayed home to keep Chloe company.
The others went out together.
Alexander continued to act as Evelyn's driver.
Mrs. Lawrence had her own car.
The two cars drove toward the kindergarten one after the other.
Alexander had just driven out of the Nan family villa's underground garage when he paused and looked in the rearview mirror.
Three cars were parked in an inconspicuous spot in the distance.
His eyes darkened thoughtfully as he withdrew his gaze.
Evelyn spoke. "Is it Mr. Valentine?"
Alexander nodded. "Looks like it."
He glanced at Evelyn and said calmly, "Mr. Valentine appears domineering and decisive on the surface, but he's actually very righteous."
"His feelings for your mother run deep. He remained unmarried all these years because of her."
He smiled. "By the way..."
"Do you know why I went to the Valentine family on behalf of the Vances to propose back then?"
Evelyn was momentarily lost in thought.
Back then, she was forced by Linda Lowell and William Ashcroft into a flash marriage.
She only found out at City Hall that she was already married to Alexander.
Looking back now, it felt like a lifetime ago.
Her past self was suppressed and brainwashed by Linda, living a repressed life in the Ashcroft family.
For freedom, she worked desperately.
She gradually built her own courier company, repair company, later developed new energy, and became Nora...
Perhaps due to a lack of security since childhood, she only wanted to earn more money and buy houses all over the country.
Instead of always living under someone else's roof, in the Ashcroft family's dark basement.
Life was hard back then, but fulfilling.
But that life was shattered after just two months.
The mysterious Nan family...
The sister who suddenly appeared and died for her...
It felt like a conspiracy net had fallen from the sky, trapping her tightly.
She wanted to break free but couldn't find a way out.
She could only go with the flow, feeling deeply powerless.
Recalling the past, she suddenly felt those simpler times were better.
As she was lost in memories, Alexander continued to explain.
"Mr. Valentine asked me to go. The Vance family has been supporting the Valentine family all these years because of Mr. Valentine's care."
"He knew if the Valentine family helped directly, your mother wouldn't accept it..."
Mother-in-law...
Evelyn's face grew warm.
Seeing she didn't object, Alexander continued.
"When your mother fell ill back then, Mr. Valentine rushed to San Francisco overnight."
"It shows he has always cared deeply for your mother. Actually, there's a misunderstanding between them..."
Evelyn immediately asked, "What misunderstanding?"
