Mina Sherwood's heart felt as if it were being shredded.
The months of her pregnancy had been pure torment.
No one believed her.
She had endured until the third month, when she could finally undergo an amniocentesis with Marcus Valentine.
The reporters had ruined everything.
She knew Marcus had been provoked.
She could understand his actions.
But she could not forgive the pain he caused.
Mina smiled bitterly.
A heavy, dragging sensation settled in her lower abdomen.
It had been two hours since she took the pill.
Was the baby leaving her now?
Evelyn Ross spoke suddenly. "The baby is actually fine."
Mina was stunned. "What?"
She smiled mockingly. "Grace, you don't need to comfort me. After taking an abortion pill, even if it doesn't work, the baby won't be healthy."
Evelyn cleared her throat softly. "I switched the abortion pill for a vitamin."
Mina froze.
Alexander Vance strode over. "I discovered Marcus had bought the abortion pill and told Evelyn. She found an opportunity to go home and switch them."
Mina was bewildered. "How did you discover he bought the pill?"
Alexander paused.
It was when Evelyn had forced him to go get Marcus to sign the divorce agreement.
He hadn't wanted to interfere in a couple's affairs.
But Evelyn had been insistent.
He had people track Marcus's movements and accidentally discovered the purchase.
Alexander gave a light cough. "I happened to see it."
Mina frowned. "But my stomach hurts."
"Psychosomatic."
Evelyn's words were direct and precise.
Mina was silent for a moment.
She focused on the sensation. "It... really doesn't seem to hurt anymore."
Evelyn supported her arm. "The choice is yours now. Tell Marcus, or don't tell him?"
Mina looked down.
If she told him, he definitely wouldn't want the divorce.
Better not to say anything.
She didn't want to use Marcus.
Her husband's lack of trust had exhausted her.
She truly wanted a divorce.
If not for Evelyn, he would have killed their child.
She wasn't a saint.
The baby being okay didn't absolve his despicable behavior.
Mina made her decision. "I want to go somewhere no one knows me. Raise the baby in peace. Live my life."
"Stay at the Nan family home," Evelyn said directly. "I'd worry about you alone in a strange place."
Marcus's oligospermia still needed to be investigated.
If someone was targeting Marcus, would they harm Mina if they knew her baby wasn't terminated?
Evelyn felt the situation was becoming complex.
She helped Mina into the car, and Alexander joined them.
Alexander took the driver's seat.
Evelyn and Mina sat in the back.
During the drive, Mina bowed her head, tears falling.
Evelyn didn't know how to comfort her, just gently patted her hand.
Mina wiped her tears. "Grace, I'm okay."
She looked at Alexander in the driver's seat. "Boy Toy, thank you this time."
Alexander was about to offer a polite response.
Mina continued. "Evelyn, I think you should just be with this Boy Toy. That Alexander Vance isn't right for you... His wife just died, and he went to the Ashcroft family reunion gala with a dowry. He's clearly not a good man."
Alexander: "..."
He suddenly felt a twinge of regret for helping her.
...
At the Evans residence.
Justin Evans stormed into the house and found Mrs. Evans.
"Mom, I was played!"
Mrs. Evans looked at him coldly. "You're a fool. Who else is to blame?"
Justin threw his phone in front of her. "Look! They set me up! They talked about oligospermia, so I believed it! Now look!"
He pointed angrily at the news on the TV. "The child is his! It was all a farce! He used the chance to promote a new product, staged that scene in the car refusing to get out, let people try to smash it without success. Acted like it was real! The stock price shot up instantly!"
Mrs. Evans's face was dark.
She looked at Justin. "I heard Evelyn Ross wanted to cooperate with our family, made inquiries before. Whatever her goal was, cooperation is out of the question now!"
She picked up Justin's phone. "This report, didn't you verify it before sending it?"
Justin was even more aggrieved. "I did verify it! He went for the check-up, and it just happened to be at our family's hospital! Would our own doctor lie to me? Who knew there'd be this kind of twist!"
Mrs. Evans gave the butler a look.
The butler immediately went to investigate.
He returned five minutes later. "The doctor is indeed ours. No issues."
Justin was puzzled. "Then what happened?"
Mrs. Evans was exasperated. "He has his own hospital. Why go to ours? He must have switched the samples! He was setting this up a month ago! Devious!"
Justin fumed. "The Valentines are too cunning! They seem honest, but they're like this!"
Mrs. Evans sighed.
She exited Justin's text messages, about to return the phone, when her eyes caught an unread message.
Unknown Sender: [Hello, I am the owner of that jade piece. May I ask who you are?]
Mrs. Evans froze.
She sharply turned to Justin. "This message, why haven't you read it?!"
Justin cared most about his sister's situation.
When placing the external advertisement, they had used his number.
Justin was also stunned. "I've been busy with the Valentine matter recently, missed a lot of messages. Could this be... sister?"
Mrs. Evans urged. "Go contact them immediately!"
Justin quickly nodded. "Right, it must be sister! Technology is advanced now, no one would falsely claim this!"
