Chapter 86

Evelyn Ross spoke urgently. "I—"

Grace Lorenz had already turned and walked away.

Her voice carried from outside. "Her condition is poor. Even if you question her through the night, do not use the bright lights."

"Fine. We'll give Dr. Lorenz this courtesy."

Evelyn sighed softly.

Grace had just staked her professional reputation on Evelyn not seeking bail.

James Klein immediately contradicted her.

No wonder she was so angry.

It couldn't be helped.

Her body could hold on for two more days.

If Grace could find evidence to prove her innocence within that time.

Then she wouldn't need to apply for bail.

...

Upstairs in the equipment room.

Grace placed the blood collected from Evelyn's fingertip into the analyzer.

It would take twenty minutes for the blood composition analysis.

Her phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from the detention center. "Dr. Lorenz, we heard you're at the station. We have an inmate here feeling unwell. Could you take a look?"

Grace stood up immediately. "I'll be right there."

A forensic pathologist is different from a medical doctor.

But she could handle minor ailments.

She put on her coat and left.

She soon arrived at the detention center cells.

This area held suspects awaiting trial.

It also held inmates serving sentences of three months or less.

Evelyn had just been in a solitary cell here.

She walked to the cell number the officer indicated.

She put on a mask and gloves.

Pushing the door open, her voice was cool. "Who is unwell?"

"Me…"

A vaguely familiar voice made Grace frown.

She saw a middle-aged woman in prison clothes clutching her stomach. "Doctor, my stomach hurts terribly. Can you take me to the hospital…"

Grace paused slightly.

This person… was Evelyn's mother, Linda Lowell.

She had attended a parent-teacher conference for Evelyn in middle school!

She stepped forward with concern. "Auntie, where does it hurt?"

Linda had been sentenced to fifteen days detention for giving false testimony.

She grabbed Grace's hand. "My stomach… it's killing me…"

Grace reached to press her abdomen. "Here? I'll take you to the hospital!"

"Don't touch! It hurts too much…" Linda looked around, her expression pitiful. "No need for the hospital. It's just a chill. Officer, could you take me to a solitary cell? My moaning here disturbs the others' rest…"

Grace nodded. "Alright."

She helped Linda up and was about to leave.

Another inmate in the cell suddenly cried out. "Ouch, my stomach hurts too! Officer, take me to a solitary cell!"

The other prisoners burst into laughter.

"My stomach hurts too…"

"My head aches. Can I go sleep in a private room?"

Grace frowned.

Someone mocked Linda. "We all eat the same food. How did only you catch a chill? Five days in, and you've been 'unwell' for four. The reincarnation of a delicate maiden!"

"You're dying of pain here, but the moment you get to a solitary cell, you're fine. Even snore!"

Grace understood. She looked at Linda.

Linda's face stiffened, but she continued to whimper. "I really am unwell…"

Grace's jaw tightened. "I'll take you to the hospital for a check-up. If you're faking illness, your detention might be extended…"

Linda immediately grew nervous.

She had no desire to stay here.

Every night was filled with farts, foot-scratching, and bizarre sleeping positions.

She hadn't slept a wink the first night due to the noise.

That's why she came up with this plan.

Going to the hospital would expose her.

Linda offered a placating smile. "No, no, it's a minor issue. I'll just bear with it…"

Grace understood. "Auntie, were you pretending?"

Linda scurried back to her bunk and burrowed under the covers. "How can you say that, Officer? How was I pretending? It really hurt just now, but it's better now. Can't an illness heal?"

Grace felt a vein throb on her forehead!

A female inmate nearby cursed angrily. "You old swindler! So good at lying!"

Linda retorted. "This is nothing compared to my daughter! She deceived me terribly! That little wretch deserves to die!"

Remembering that Evelyn was Dr. Nan made her seethe with hatred.

Grace found the words grating.

Her jaw tight, she closed the cell door and headed back upstairs.

After obtaining the blood test report, her expression changed drastically.

Iron levels were normal!

Not anemic at all!

Liar!

Grace trembled with anger.

She rushed downstairs and slammed the report in front of Evelyn. "Evelyn Ross, is it fun to deceive me over and over again?!"

Evelyn didn't look at the report. She sighed softly. "It's not anemic now. It will take two more days."

She had tried to explain earlier, but Grace didn't give her the chance.

Her anemia was special.

She lost a massive amount of iron during her period, requiring preemptive infusions.

Normally, as long as she didn't bleed, her iron levels were fine.

After visiting numerous hospitals, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease.

Grace found it ridiculous. "Do you expect me to believe such a tall tale? Evelyn Ross, couldn't you even come up with a plausible lie to deceive me?!"

Evelyn had no strength to explain. "...I'm not lying to you."

"Not lying? I've studied medicine for years. I've never heard of such a condition!"

Evelyn pressed her lips together and remained silent.

Her condition was indeed peculiar. It was normal for Grace not to believe her.

Further explanation was futile.

Seeing her silence, Grace's anger flared.

Captain Durant nearby sighed. "Dr. Lorenz, she's been like this all night, refusing to speak. Let it go. Send her back to her cell. Otherwise, our people will have to stay up all night with her, and we still won't get anything…"

Grace shouted angrily. "You all leave. I'll stay with her!! I want to see how many more lies she can fabricate!!"

Captain Durant was helpless. "Fine. We'll go get some sleep. If she confesses, call us immediately."

Everyone left. Only the two of them remained in the interrogation room.

Grace sat opposite her, staring fixedly. "Why lie? Why seek bail? Do those doubts not exist at all? Were you just using me to testify that you're not the murderer?"

Evelyn said, "Don't worry. Within two days, I will not agree to bail."

After two days, survival came first.

Grace was taken aback. Her eyes reddened further. "Do you think saying that will make me forgive you?!"

She turned her head to wipe the corner of her eye.

Evelyn said no more.

The night deepened.

Perhaps her period was approaching, or perhaps she had stayed up too late.

Evelyn felt dizzy, with a slight pain in her lower abdomen.

She endured the entire night.

The next morning.

Evelyn's dizziness grew increasingly intense…

Damn it.

Lack of rest had caused her period to come early.

She was becoming anemic!

Grace had stayed up all night, her mind in turmoil.

As daylight broke, she glared viciously at Evelyn.

But she saw Evelyn's face was deathly pale, utterly devoid of color…

Grace shot to her feet, panicked. "Evelyn Ross, what's wrong with you?!"
