Before Thomas could finish, Alexander opened the divorce agreement sent by Evelyn.
His eyes scanned the document, pausing at the asset division section.
His brow lifted slightly.
Thomas leaned in and snorted. "She actually specified you can't claim any of her assets? What assets? Is she worried you'll go after her credit line?"
Alexander looked up. "What did you find?"
"Boss, we discovered she only learned about the marriage when she went to get married a few days ago. This agreement seems genuine. She wants out quickly."
Thomas paused. "But that makes it more suspicious. Her records after leaving the Ashcroft family are mostly erased. Why would a normal person hide like that?"
Alexander tapped the desk. "So you think she's involved?"
"Definitely. But her motive... that will take more time."
Alexander spoke calmly. "Anything else?"
Thomas scratched his head. "The incident two years ago is hard to trace. We were moving constantly back then. The only lead might be if the old lady recovers her memory..."
Alexander shot him a look.
Thomas immediately bowed his head. "We failed you. We'll keep investigating."
Alexander printed two copies and stood. "Any contact with Researcher Nora?"
Rumor said Nora's Alzheimer's treatment was entering clinical trials. A breakthrough drug was imminent.
Alexander wanted it for his grandmother immediately.
Thomas lowered his head further. "Nora is elusive. Every biotech firm is watching. No one can find her..."
Feeling the chill from his boss, he quickly added, "I'll find her, boss. I promise!"
...
Evelyn had just finished dinner with Eleanor when her phone buzzed.
A message from Alexander: "Downstairs. Now."
She excused herself to take out the trash and walked to the black Bentley.
He handed her the agreement. "No objections. Sign."
He watched closely, expecting hesitation.
Instead, she signed quickly and looked up. "City Hall tomorrow?"
His eyes darkened. "In a hurry?"
She nodded. "Very."
Her company's IPO couldn't wait.
He studied her. "Fine."
She added, "Nine AM. Bring all documents. City Hall."
He was about to agree when his expression changed.
Eleanor stood outside the car, pale and trembling.
She clutched her chest. "You're getting divorced?"
Before anyone could answer, she collapsed.
"Grandmother!"
...
Outside the VIP suite at First Hospital.
The doctor was stern. "She's stable, but no more stress. Absolutely no upsetting her."
Evelyn remembered the frantic抢救 scene and shuddered.
She glanced at Alexander.
He appeared calm and composed.
But when the doctor said "stable," he loosened his tie, sat slowly, and his clasped hands trembled slightly.
A nurse called out from the room. "She's awake!"
Alexander rushed in.
Evelyn followed. The old woman's eyes were open.
She looked at Evelyn, voice hoarse. "Granddaughter-in-law, I dreamed you were divorcing... It wasn't real, was it?"
Evelyn stayed silent, but Alexander spoke. "It wasn't real."
"So no divorce?"
"No divorce."
"Give me your household register and marriage certificate."
"Okay."
Alexander agreed to everything.
The old woman looked at Evelyn. "Granddaughter-in-law, is he lying?"
Evelyn thought of the doctor's warning and whispered, "No."
Only then did Eleanor relax.
She needed to stay overnight for observation.
Evelyn and Alexander remained in the room.
Night deepened.
Evelyn curled on the sofa, checking her phone.
She was drafting a clinical report on an Alzheimer's drug. The document was in English. One technical problem remained unsolved.
It required extensive biomedical literature.
As she pondered, a new message arrived.
"Doggy": ["After grandmother recovers, then we divorce."]
She couldn't refuse.
The agreement was signed. Assets were clear. Her marital status didn't affect the IPO. Timing wasn't crucial.
Evelyn: ["Agreed."]
Alexander stared at the single word reply, eyes narrowing. ["Any other conditions?"]
Evelyn: ["Once she's fully recovered, we finalize it quickly."]
He frowned, suddenly finding her utterly inscrutable.
In the bed, the old woman glanced between Evelyn and Alexander.
They barely spoke.
This wouldn't do.
She suddenly declared, "Boy, I'm getting our granddaughter-in-law a job at Vance Group!"
Daily commutes together. Constant proximity. Feelings would develop naturally.
Alexander paused. "Fine."
He was unusually agreeable tonight.
She pondered. "What position should it be?"
An idea struck. "Granddaughter-in-law, start tomorrow with him!"
Evelyn blinked her peach-blossom eyes. "Okay."
It occurred to her—Vance Group's database might have the literature she needed!
Alexander had a meeting and left with Thomas.
In the hallway, Thomas couldn't hold back. "No wonder she signed so fast! She planned this! Let the old lady see on purpose. This divorce won't happen!"
He looked at Alexander. "Boss, she even seized a chance to join Vance Group. She's scheming! Why agree?"
"Keep your enemies closer. How else do we learn her game?"
His eyes glinted sharply.
For his grandmother, divorce was off the table.
As for the woman's innocence... Her actions at the company would reveal all!
Back in the room, Evelyn lay on the sofa.
She heard the old woman whisper, "Granddaughter-in-law, I'll tell you a secret..."
Evelyn leaned in immediately. "What secret?"
Had she remembered something else?
