Evelyn's heart raced.
She desperately hoped the old lady could remember something important.
Something about how they first met.
Something about why she and Alexander were married.
"Grandma, what is the secret?"
Evelyn asked softly.
The old lady lowered her voice mysteriously. "That brat has a fatal weakness. I'll tell you now. If he dares to bully you, use this against him!"
Evelyn fell silent.
She didn't actually want to pry into others' privacy.
But the old lady was enthusiastic. "Don't be fooled by his cold face all day. He's actually afraid of cats."
Evelyn was stunned.
Deep in her memory, a little boy was also afraid of cats...
But Alexander, such a tall and powerful man, was afraid of cats?
The old lady asked again, "Granddaughter-in-law, do you like cats or dogs?"
"Dogs."
She used to like cats, but that boy didn't, so she changed her preference.
Evelyn quickly understood the old lady's intention.
The next day, on the top floor of the Vance Group.
"Woof! Woof!" A little Corgi wagged its tail and rubbed against Evelyn's leg.
Thomas looked helpless. "The job Madam arranged for you, Miss Evelyn, is to take care of this little dog."
Alexander frowned.
The old lady was getting older and acting willfully, which was understandable.
But bringing a dog to work... that was just absurd!
He ordered coldly, "Take her... and the dog to report to the New Energy R&D Department, Group One."
This had been his plan for a while.
The New Energy R&D Department wasn't involved in core business, but it concerned the group's future. It was perfect for testing her background.
Thomas immediately agreed.
Evelyn indifferently picked up the little dog and asked casually, "What's its name?"
Thomas: "It doesn't have one yet. Madam said you should decide."
Evelyn glanced at Alexander and suddenly smiled. "Then call it Mimi."
"Name a dog Mimi?"
"Is that not allowed?"
"...It's fine."
…
The New Energy R&D Department was located on the 38th floor of the Vance Group.
Inside the elevator.
Thomas explained, "Miss Evelyn, most of the R&D staff at Vance Group have PhDs. The lowest qualification is a master's degree from a prestigious university. You are the first undergraduate! It will be good for you to learn from the seniors here. This was specially arranged by the boss. Of course, you don't need to be too grateful. It's the boss's way of thanking you for making Madam happy~"
Evelyn: "..." It really wasn't necessary.
"Also, the boss doesn't want your relationship to be public. It avoids trouble later when you divorce."
Evelyn lazily looked up. "I was thinking the same thing."
Thomas: ?
This woman dared to look down on the boss?
He was about to say more when the elevator arrived.
The New Energy R&D Department was divided into two groups, one on each side of a central common area.
As soon as Evelyn stepped out of the elevator, she heard some male colleagues gossiping.
"I heard a beautiful intern is joining Group One today!"
"Finally, a girl in our monastery! This is great!"
Someone from Group Two sneered. "Group Two is about to hire Dr. Nan as a technical consultant. What's a mere undergraduate intern? Can a pretty face put food on the table?"
The Group One staff were about to retort when a cold voice cut in. "What's with all this chattering? A bunch of grown men. Don't you have work to do?"
The speaker was Jason Lawrence, the leader of Group One. He was in his late twenties, tall with sharp features, radiating arrogance.
Everyone immediately scattered.
He looked at Evelyn impatiently. "Thomas, an undergraduate with zero experience? And you dare to dump her on me?"
Thomas smiled apologetically. "It's the boss's order."
Jason was still displeased. He looked down at Evelyn. "I don't care what connections you have. In my group, you follow my rules! No bringing dogs to work next time!"
Evelyn couldn't be bothered to explain. "Fine."
Jason pointed her to an empty office.
After she entered, he said to Thomas, "Thomas, this is the last time. Of course, if my cousin can get Dr. Nan to come, you can dump as many connected people here as you want!"
As a relative of the Vance family, he got into the company on merit alone.
He hated nepotism the most!
…
Evelyn found her first day at a desk job novel.
No one assigned her any work, so she enjoyed the leisure.
She played with "Mimi" in the office for a while. The little thing soon curled up in a corner and fell asleep.
She got up quietly, closed the door, and planned to go to the Vance R&D database.
Only by developing a breakthrough treatment for Alzheimer's, helping the old lady recover, could she uncover the truth and solve the mystery of her marriage to Alexander!
Evelyn found a colleague who looked friendly and asked, "Excuse me, how do I get to the database?"
The male colleague blushed and was about to give directions when a cold voice interrupted. "Why do you need to go to the database?"
Evelyn turned. It was Jason.
She replied, "I want to learn."
Jason sneered. "You? What qualifications does an undergraduate have to enter the database? It contains cutting-edge international technology. Master the group's basic theories first!"
Evelyn: "…"
She took out her phone, ready to contact Alexander directly. Only a fool wouldn't use their privileges!
Before she could send the message, Jason snorted. "It's no use calling anyone. I'm not afraid of connected people! Stay put in my group. Don't put on airs and annoy people!"
The friendly male colleague suddenly spoke up. "Team Leader, she graduated from San Francisco University. Her major grades were very good…"
Jason immediately cut him off. "What use is book knowledge? Every new graduate starts from zero!"
He randomly picked up a stack of documents and threw them to Evelyn. "This is our group's new energy project. Ask her if she can understand it? Newcomers should know their place!"
Evelyn lowered her head and quickly skimmed through them…
Jason couldn't help but mock her. "Flipping through it so fast, you think you're Dr. Nan? If you can't understand it, get back to your office and stay there!"
It was said Dr. Nan had a photographic memory.
Evelyn looked up and retorted coldly, "Who says I can't understand it?"
