Marcus Valentine stood at the living room entrance, his brow deeply furrowed.
His assistant stood quietly behind him.
He saw a girl with her back to the door, clutching two copies of a Divorce Agreement tightly in her hands.
Her shoulders trembled slightly.
Zack's voice was full of impatience. "Grace, look at yourself! Lazing around at home all day while I run the company! What do you do? Besides having a child, what else? Living a life of luxury all these years, and now you won't take on a single debt?"
The girl's voice was choked with tears, her head bowed low. "When we graduated, you said I didn't need a job... You promised you'd take care of me forever..."
Evelyn Ross had spent this time reading through Grace's diaries.
The diaries were filled with sweet memories of her time with Zack.
University-era Zack was gentle and considerate. When he proposed after graduation, his vows were sincere and passionate.
She imitated Grace's tone, her voice breaking. "You said working was too hard. You would manage the company for me. You would earn the money. I just needed to stay beautiful."
"You said what happened with Kelsey Lopez was just a fling. That you loved me the most..."
"You said you'd love our child the same, boy or girl..."
"..."
She was saying these lines for Grace.
"Enough!"
Zack cut her off roughly, his face dark. "What's the point of all this? So I found someone else. Are you so innocent yourself? You slept with Mr. Vance!"
Evelyn's head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief.
He knew exactly what happened that night. How could he twist the truth like this?
Mrs. Davis immediately backed her son up. "Exactly! You're the one who broke your vows. How dare you judge my son? Just sign the papers!"
Marcus, listening outside, felt his anger boil over.
He was about to push the door open when he heard the girl's trembling voice. "Fine. I'll sign!"
Marcus paused.
...If this could end the marriage, maybe it was for the best.
It was just an agreement. With Grace's status, she could nullify it anytime if she changed her mind.
He decided to wait and see a moment longer.
Inside the living room.
Evelyn seemed to reluctantly pick up the pen and sign the Divorce Agreement.
Kelsey smiled with satisfaction.
Zack breathed a sigh of relief.
Mrs. Davis couldn't wait. "We'll go to City Hall for the divorce certificate tomorrow!"
Zack nodded, his gaze lingering on the villa. He started to say something, but Evelyn interrupted him. "Zack, I've agreed to all the terms. Can you grant me one request?"
Zack eyed her warily. "What is it?"
Evelyn's voice was soft and weak. "How much child support can you give Chloe each month?"
Zack immediately exploded. "The company is in debt! I'm out of a job! Where would I get money to raise that useless girl?"
Mrs. Davis shrilled, "Don't push your luck, Grace! Any money Zack makes now is for my future grandson!"
Kelsey gave a light laugh. "The law says a father should pay 20% of his income for child support. But Zack isn't steadily employed right now. He really can't afford it."
In truth, Zack already had a new job lined up with a handsome salary.
Kelsey, of course, wouldn't mention that.
Evelyn bit her lip, her eyes reddening. "You're Chloe's father. You have an obligation to support her... I'm taking on all this debt. How will I raise her? How will we live without your support?"
Zack roared, "How you live is not my problem! Go beg under a bridge if you have to!"
Mrs. Davis sneered. "You have hands and feet. You won't starve."
Kelsey fanned the flames. "Auntie, Grace just doesn't want to work. She wants Zack to keep supporting her."
"In her dreams!" Mrs. Davis spat.
Evelyn's voice was tearful. "Zack, you are her legal father! If the child can't afford school, the authorities will hold you responsible! This isn't some unreasonable demand..."
Marcus, listening outside, grew increasingly agitated.
The divorce is happening, and she's still hung up on a little child support?
Can't this woman have any self-respect?
He suppressed his anger, feeling that Grace wasn't worth his intervention.
Inside the living room.
Evelyn's words made Mrs. Davis jump. "Once you're divorced, what father is he? Besides, with your promiscuous ways, who knows if the child is even his? We need a way to sever all ties completely!"
Kelsey immediately suggested, "How about signing a Severance Agreement?"
A glint of triumph flashed in Evelyn's eyes.
Objective achieved.
She pretended to panic, shaking her head. "No, please don't..."
Zack immediately pulled out a blank sheet of paper. "You don't get a say! We're cutting ties today, for good!"
