Chapter 46

Chloe Roland's eyes were red-rimmed.

Her voice trembled. "My brother…"

"He said he'll be here in half an hour."

A sour, churning ache filled Chloe's chest.

She had met and fallen in love with her husband on their university campus.

At graduation, her parents and brother had firmly opposed the marriage.

Her husband had knelt, swearing vows of eternal love.

She had resolutely followed him to San Francisco.

For the past two years, her family had called countless times, urging her to come home.

She had stubbornly insisted on proving her choice was right.

Her parents fell silent. Her brother made one demand.

Conceal her family background. A two-year test.

She was the Roland family's precious daughter, cherished since childhood.

After moving to San Francisco, her mother-in-law taught her how to manage a household.

Every time she called her mother to say she had learned to cook and clean,

Her mother would choke up and cry.

She said Chloe had been pampered her whole life, not meant for such chores.

But Chloe accepted it willingly.

She just had to endure two years, and then her family would be reunited.

She never imagined she would nearly lose her life here.

All over fifty thousand dollars…

Only now did she have a sudden, painful awakening.

Her parents' words had been wise.

She had degraded herself!

Chloe forced her eyes wide open.

She needed to remember her savior's face!!

Her husband's grating voice cut through the air. "You think helping her will benefit you? Dream on! Her family is dirt poor. They won't pay even if they come! As for you, they'll just think you're a meddler!"

Rage made Chloe's vision darken.

She pleaded desperately. "My brother won't abandon me… Honey, my family has money… I'll give you the house, just let me go…"

"Your house?" Her husband's face twisted viciously. "That's marital property! Besides, you were the one who insisted on eloping. It must be because your family didn't love you, right? You haven't contacted them in two years. Why would your brother care about you now?"

She had insisted on eloping?

Blinding fury overwhelmed Chloe. She couldn't catch her breath and fell into complete unconsciousness!

Evelyn Ross saw her breathing stop and immediately stepped forward. "She needs resuscitation!"

"No resuscitation!" Her husband jumped back. "My wife said she didn't want to die ugly! She chose a natural death! No resuscitation! Mind your own business!"

Evelyn clenched her fists.

This man was utterly despicable!

Her mother-in-law rushed forward, blocking the way. "Everyone, be the judge! My daughter-in-law's last wish was to die at home! This person is stopping us!"

Her loud voice drew a crowd.

The mother-in-law wailed dramatically. "Daughter-in-law, your fate is so bitter! If not for this meddler, you wouldn't have to die in the hospital!"

Evelyn knew arguing would only waste precious time.

She charged at the husband, reaching for Chloe!

The husband tried to dodge, but Evelyn swiftly dislocated his arm.

Chloe fell into Evelyn's arms and was laid flat on the floor.

CPR began immediately!

The Head Nurse arrived at the commotion. "What's going on here?"

The mother-in-law sobbed. "Head Nurse, we've given up on resuscitation. This stranger is forcing her way…"

The husband, sweating from pain, cried out. "I'm her legal guardian! She said before she died she didn't want resuscitation! She wanted to die with dignity! Who does this woman think she is?"

The Head Nurse frowned, stepping closer. "Miss, you…"

Evelyn didn't stop her compressions. "She doesn't want to die. I contacted her brother. He's on his way."

The Head Nurse said immediately, "The brother is also family, a legal guardian. If he doesn't give up on resuscitation, it can continue!"

The husband and mother-in-law were stunned.

Isabella Ashcroft spoke softly. "Evelyn, don't force things. Even if she lives, the surgery is fifty thousand. The follow-up rehab is a bottomless pit. The deceased and her husband have given up. You had to call her brother. Every family has its difficulties. You can't morally blackmail others…"

The husband had a sudden realization and cried out. "Our family has no money! My brother-in-law's family has no money either! The surgery is fifty thousand! Monthly treatment after that is six thousand… My wife didn't want to burden us and her family… It's my fault! I'm useless! I can only watch my wife die! Waaa!"

The man's crying was moving.

Countless patients in the hospital chose to give up treatment.

The surrounding crowd began to criticize.

"This young girl is too naive. She doesn't understand life's hardships…"

"All passion, delaying the burial…"

"Isn't this desecration of a corpse?"

The mother-in-law shrieked. "Everyone, pull her away! Security! Someone is violating a corpse here!"

Security moved to step forward. Evelyn looked up sharply.

Her fierce gaze swept over the crowd. "You are all aiding murder!!"

Security paused.

The mother-in-law seized the chance, rushing up and grabbing Evelyn's hair. "Let go of my daughter-in-law! Don't touch her body!"

She absolutely could not let them save Chloe!

Scalp screaming in pain, Evelyn gritted her teeth. CPR was at a critical moment.

She endured, continuing the chest compressions.

The mother-in-law pinched her, leaving bruises, but Evelyn ignored it completely…

Isabella sneered.

Evelyn was truly foolish.

This mother and son were trouble. She had brought big trouble on herself!

Downstairs at the inpatient building, several luxury cars screeched to a halt.

Before they fully stopped, a tall figure leaped out.

Ryan Roland's expression was icy cold as he charged upstairs with black-suited bodyguards!
