Ryan Roland rushed to the second floor.
He immediately saw his sister lying on the floor.
Chloe Roland's face was deathly pale.
Her eyes were tightly shut.
A girl knelt beside her, performing CPR.
Ryan's heart clenched.
This was a hospital.
Why weren't they using medical equipment?
The question flashed through his mind.
Then he saw an old woman trying to pull the rescuing girl away.
The old woman yanked the girl's hair.
Her voice was shrill. "Stop! My daughter-in-law has no money for treatment! Let her pass peacefully!"
Chloe's husband stood nearby.
He looked anguished. "The surgery costs five hundred thousand. Follow-up care is sixty thousand a month... I can't afford it... Her brother's family is struggling too..."
Ryan's face darkened instantly.
A terrifying aura radiated from him.
His sister had lived a life of luxury since childhood.
A single piece of her jewelry cost more than five hundred thousand.
Now this family was driving her to her death?
He strode toward Chloe.
The old woman noticed Chloe's fingers twitching.
She was clearly being revived.
Enraged, the old woman clawed at the girl's face.
Her sharp nails aimed with vicious intent.
Evelyn Ross felt Chloe's heartbeat return.
She also sensed the old woman's malice.
She turned her head sharply.
She was about to grab the old woman's wrist.
"Thud—"
A man suddenly appeared.
He kicked the old woman squarely in the chest.
She was sent flying.
She landed heavily on the floor.
Clutching her chest, she couldn't speak.
Her husband pointed at the man and yelled. "Who are you? Bullying us poor people? I'll call the police!"
Ryan's eyes were icy.
He kicked the husband away too.
He ordered his bodyguards. "Teach them a lesson. Call the police. Charge them with attempted murder."
He knelt beside Chloe.
His voice trembled. "Chloe, your brother is here..."
Evelyn spoke up. "Her heartbeat is back. She needs surgery immediately."
Ryan looked up. "Thank you."
He had already arranged for doctors.
He picked up Chloe and quickly left.
Police arrived soon after.
They confirmed the mother-in-law and husband were suspects in attempted murder.
Both were arrested.
Bystanders gave Evelyn thumbs-up.
Evelyn finished giving her statement and prepared to leave.
Isabella Ashcroft still stood not far away.
She frowned.
That "brother" had an imposing presence.
She should have made that call herself.
Evelyn stole all the credit!
Her tone was sarcastic. "Evelyn, your ambition is so transparent. You only saved her because you realized she was important. Too bad her brother didn't even acknowledge you!"
After the taunt, she turned toward Mrs. Ashcroft's room.
Evelyn watched her retreating figure.
She thought of how Isabella had twisted the truth earlier.
Now she only spoke of benefits.
Evelyn found her utterly malicious.
Of course Chloe's brother would prioritize saving his sister.
Evelyn hadn't saved her for a reward.
She touched her scalp.
She winced in pain.
The old woman had pulled too hard.
She smoothed her disheveled hair.
She sighed.
She texted Alexander Vance that she was going home.
…
Alexander waited in the hospital room.
The memory in the car still made his heart race.
He frowned, suppressing the flutter.
His eyes kept drifting to the door.
The girl hadn't returned.
Was she also embarrassed?
He frowned slightly.
Also?
Half an hour later, he received a WhatsApp.
Evelyn said she had something to do and was staying home.
Alexander felt relieved.
But then he frowned again.
What could she possibly have to do?
…
Evelyn took a taxi home.
She used a lot of conditioner after her shower.
Her hair finally became manageable.
Seeing the fallen strands, she felt a pang of regret.
She ate fried liver for dinner to replenish iron.
Then she opened her laptop to work overtime.
The night passed.
Evelyn arrived at the company early the next morning.
She ran into Jason Lawrence at the entrance.
His dark circles were lighter.
Seeing her get out of a taxi, he visibly relaxed.
"I kept thinking last night. Something felt off. My cousin sent you home. Do you live together? Good thing you didn't arrive together this morning."
Evelyn stayed silent.
They usually did arrive together.
But she didn't explain.
Jason glanced at her.
He said haughtily, "I know why my cousin looked so upset yesterday. He's trying to collaborate with the Roland family. But Ryan Roland doesn't get along with him. He's coming to the company today to discuss business. My cousin must have a headache."
Evelyn paused.
Ryan Roland? The brother of that girl from yesterday?
She didn't notice the company entrance.
Ryan Roland was following a secretary into Vance Group.
His sister's surgery had been very successful.
She woke up this morning and saw their parents.
The three of them embraced and cried.
His sister urgently asked about the savior's whereabouts.
The savior had already left.
Ryan promised to find the savior and thank her properly.
He had witnessed how desperately that girl fought.
The Roland family owed her a life.
But what did that girl do?
Where did she work?
As he pondered, he spotted Evelyn waiting for the elevator.
